As a small city, you can’t precisely recognize what constitutes a suburb in Tomar, as what I call suburb is often at a walking distance from central areas of the town. So I regard suburbs those areas that were built as an extension of the older, more popular and more well known places of the city. In this case the buildings at this street called Rua da Cascalheira, are relatively new, considering how old Tomar is. Therefore in my book it classifies as a suburb of Tomar.
This is a relatively new suburb, located at Rua da Cascalheira in Tomar. My mother lives nearby at Travessa da Cascalheira
Though these apartments are more or less modern, this suburb is quite close to an old area of Tomar
This suburb at Rua da Cascalheira in the City of Tomar, is an extension of a very old road with the same name, which is more like a staircase, that leads to a sports pavilion and the Camping Park of Tomar in the Mouchão area
I know that this isn’t exactly a touristic spot in the City of Tomar and it is the kind of suburb where nobody wants to go indefinitely. I am talking about the Cemetery of Tomar located at Rua de Santa Iria, and a few metres away from the headquarters of the firefighters of Tomar. It is here that some members of my family are resting for eternity, at least the remains of their bodies as I believe that the soul survives physical death. There was a time this cemetery was in the outskirts of Tomar. Now it’s very central, close to Avenida Norton de Matos, and the church of Santa Maria dos Olivais.

Another view of the main gate of the Cemetery of Tomar. It's here that my father was buried. I visited his grave but just felt that he wasn't really there. It's just his body not his soul
Shot of the Cemetery of Tomar taken from the other side of the street Rua de Santa Iria in Tomar. Given the expansion of Tomar, nowadays this cemetery is very central
Being a small city means that a suburb in Tomar takes a different meaning from a large city like New York or London. A suburb in the City of Tomar may even be at walking distance from the centre of the town. There is now a bus called Tuto Tomar which stands for Transportes Urbanos de Tomar (Urban Transport of Tomar), that takes you to places in the outskirts of a city, but in some cases you don’t have to catch public transport to get to one of Tomar suburbs. This is one of those cases. From where I stand when I took these photos, Mouchão Park is behind me, yet I regard this area as a suburb somewhat separated from the city centre of Tomar.
Photo shot near the Camping Park of Tomar which from where I stand in on my left. This area is also near the soccer field, yet those apartments can be regarded as a suburb of Tomar
A different perspective of this suburb of Tomar. On my right is the sports pavilion and the street in front of the buildings is Rua da Fábrica de Fiação
This is the rear of a group of buildings and on my right is Rua do Centro Republicano in the City of Tomar. It's an old street that leads to Rua Marquês de Pombal
As you know, Tomar isn’t a big city. Despite its historical importance and the beauty of the town, the population of Tomar is about 20,000 people, therefore when I mention the suburbs of this city, it isn’t the same as the suburbs of large cities of the world. You don’t have to drive long distances to get there. In fact some of the suburbs of the City of Tomar are at walking distance. This classification isn’t official. It’s just my own definition of areas that are located somewhat away from the central areas of Tomar. So this “suburb” is at the end of Avenida Norton de Matos, close to a well known seafood restaurant called Marisqueira and not far from the high schools Escola Secundária de Santa Maria dos Olivais and Escola Secundária Jácome Ratton.
This area of Tomar in at the end of Avenida Norton de Matos, close to another avenue called Avenida Ângela Tamagnini. This is a relatively modern area of the town
Same area in the City of Tomar, at Avenida Norton de Matos. On my right is a seafood restaurant called Marisqueira. We are close to a library and two high schools
If you drive to the left of Avenida Norton de Matos you will cross the new bridge of Tomar to the other side of the town
I shot these photos of this suburb located at Estrada do Prado in Tomar, from Mouchão Park and the banks of Nabão River. This suburb is one of the nicest places to live in the City of Tomar, with views to the Castle of the knights Templar and to the river and parks surrounding it. This specific location seen on these photos are at walking distance to the old town and not far away from the the Chapel of São Gregório as well as the huge staircase that leads to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade.
Those white apartements at the suburb of Estrada do Prado in Tomar, are located on the other side of Nabão River and Mouchão Park. This is a very nice suburb of Tomar
White apartments located at the suburb of Estrada do Prado, with great views to Nabão River and Mouchão Park. Some apartments and houses also have views to the Castle of Tomar
Behind the these apartments at the suburb of Estrada do Prado, lie some of the hills of Tomar, which surround the valley where this historical town was built more than 800 years ago
The City of Tomar in Portugal, isn’t only about the Convent of Christ which is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage, or the Castle of Tomar, or the beautiful Nabão River or the charming gardens of Mouchão Park or its medieval streets. It’s also about nice places to live in, which I call the Suburbs of Tomar. If you drive or walk around the town, you can also see nice houses and buildings where people nowadays live, and one of those places is this area near Estrada de Leiria. These three photos were shot from the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Tomar.
