When I shot thousands of photos of Tomar in 2010, I had in mind the possibility of building a site about the city, but I didn’t really plan on what kind of topics I would focus on. The idea of publishing photos of restaurants and eateries, was simply the result of seeing a good number of eating houses when I checked my photos. The problem with my lack of planning when I was in Portugal is that I didn’t always check the names of some restaurants and eateries. That’s why I don’t know the names of some of these eating places.
This is a beer-house and restaurant at Rua Alexandre Herculano near the headquarters of the Post Office of Tomar
This eatery at Rua dos Arcos in Tomar, sells wine and a variety of food tidbits. These places have really yummy food
This is La Bella Italian Restaurant at the corner of Travessa de São João and Rua Serpa Pinto in Tomar
Now that I have created a topic related to restaurants and eateries in Tomar, which wasn’t planned when I was taking photos around my home town, I have been searching for pictures that fit this theme. However don’t ask me about how good these eating houses are as I didn’t try them all. All I know is that the food in Portugal is delicious. If you think that these bistros don’t look fancy, when you taste the food you want to come back.
This is Restaurant Tomaz, at Rua dos Arcos in Tomar. This old street is close to Varzea Grande where the railway station and the Judicial Tribunal of Tomar are located
Small restaurant and coffee shop whose name I didn't get at the time, located at what seems to be Rua de São Gião in Tomar. Anyway it's close to Nabão River and Casa dos Cubos
Another restaurant and coffee shop, called Tropical, but this one is situated at Praça da República, to the right of the building of the Town Council of Tomar
This is a medieval street in Tomar called Rua dos Moinhos (Mills Street) and here you can find a few small eateries and restaurants just like this one on the photos below. Don’t be fooled by the humble environment of these eating houses, because the food can be outstanding and very well served. Some international chefs and cooks consider the Portuguese cuisine the most original in Western Europe thought it is not that well known.
I shot this picture by chance. I was just passing by and noticed the tables of a small restaurant at Rua dos Moinhos in Tomar and decided to capture the moment
Small and humble restaurant in a medieval narrow street in Tomar, called Rua dos Moinhos. This restaurant is called Casa Matreno and serves lunch and dinner
My mother, wife and son near this restaurant at Rua dos Moinhos in the City of Tomar. This very old street is close to Everard Street (Levada) which you can see at some distance
You can find small restaurants in most areas of Tomar. It’s really easy to find a restaurant, a coffee shop, a barbecue eatery (Churrasqueira), etc. And the food is just wonderful. In fact Portuguese food is in my view one of the best in the world, despite the fact that it isn’t as well known as other cuisines. The food in these restaurants are defined by Mediterranean cuisine with a great influence from Portugal’s former colonies like Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Portuguese Guinea, India when it was colonized by Portugal, Macao, East Timor, etc.
This photo was shot at Rua de Coimbra in Tomar and it is a barbecue shop (Churrasqueira). It's official name is Churrasqueira Rainha dos Frangos and they mainly supply takeaway barbecued chicken, which is delicious
This restaurant called Mesa dos Frades (The Friars Table) is at a narrow street in Tomar whose name I honestly don't remember. All I know is that it's in the old part of the town of Tomar.
This is a restaurant placed at Rua dos Voluntários da República in Tomar and it's called O Siciliano, possibly because it also offers food influenced by the island of Sicily in Italy
I decided to write in Portuguese, the name of this restaurant on the header of this post. For some reason it sounded better to me, perhaps because I used to hear my parents mention Nabão Restaurant a lot, when my father was still alive. You know, they were regular customers. Every Sunday they would go and have lunch together there. This habit only came to an end when my father passed away in November of 1997. As you can see in one of the photos, Nabão Restaurant is right in front of Nabão River and with that comes wonderful views while you are dining. From this restaurant you can also see the Castle of the Knights Templar in Tomar, Mouchão Park and the old areas of the town.
Nabão Restaurant faces Nabão River, which means that their customers always enjoy nice views. The restaurant is positioned in the corner of that white building behind those two trees seen on this photo
On the left side of this photo is the building that lodges Nabão Restaurant in the City of Tomar. Behind the windows you can see a couple of tables covered with red table clothes
When I shot this photo I didn't exactly aim it to Nabão Restaurant, but to the general view in front of me. So I just caught the main entrance to this restaurant in Tomar
As I mentioned before, I am not in the business of advertising restaurants in Tomar. The only reason I included this category in this photoblog, it’s because I got interesting photos, which by chance, included a few eateries and restaurants in town. In this case these shots remind me of the Festival of Human Statues which in that same night, were on show in different areas of Tomar. These are photos of the Salsinha Verde Restaurant at night. I shot these pictures from Rua Dr. Sousa, near Praça da República and right behind the building of the Town Council of Tomar.

A different angle of Salsinha Verde Restaurant in the City of Tomar, which is located near Praça da República and next to the building of the Town Council of Tomar
Lady, probably a cook who works for Salsinha Verde Restaurant, looking on to Praça da República where a large number of people were gathered to watch the Human Statues
This isn’t an advertisement or endorsement for Bela Vista Restaurant in the City of Tomar in Portugal. I just think that this place overlooking Nabão River with the Tomar Castle and Christ Convent looking down upon you deserves to be mentioned as another beautiful corner of my home town. There’s a special atmosphere inside and outside the restaurant. The setting is amazing as you can sit at a table outside on a patio surrounded by the branches and roots of a tree or on a terrace which offers you a fantastic view to Nabão River and the Castle of the Knights Templar.
