In the last set of photos about the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, I published pictures of Capelinha do Bom Jesus (Little Chapel of Good Jesus), which is possibly in the middle of the staircase of 286 steps, that leads to the other big chapel. So after stopping in the middle we continued our ascent and in this collection we can already see Senhora da Piedade Chapel on top of the hill. We were almost there.
After stopping for a while, we continued our ascent to the top of the hill where the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade in the City of Tomar was waiting for us
In this area some steps were damaged. In the distance we could already see a bit of the Chapel of Senhora da Piedade
We were slowly approaching our destination where the Chapel of Senhora da Piedade had been built in the 14th century (1512)
Until very recently I didn’t know the name of this small chapel which is located in the middle of the huge staircase that leads to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade in Tomar. Now I know and it’s called Capelinha do Bom Jesus (Little Chapel of Good Jesus). I had tried to find its name before unsuccessfully, until and by chance I stumbled on an article on the newspaper O Templário, written on July 2011, about vandalism perpetrated against this chapel. Apparently some vandals broke into the chapel, destroyed the religious sculptures and carvings and then painted Satanic symbols on the walls.
This is the little Chapel of Bom Jesus midway the huge staircase leading to the Chapel of Senhora da Piedade in Tomar. The views from here are just outstanding and I took a moment to enjoy the landscape and shoot a few more photos
A small chapel in Tomar called Capelinha do Bom Jesus, located midway the 286 steps staircase, when I was going to Senhora da Piedade Chapel. It's a really small chapel and I doubt it that more than two people can fit there at the same time

This is another set of photos shot at the staircase of Nossa Senhora da Piedade in the City of Tomar. I published a few similar photos last time but these ones show you different angles of this area. From here the landscape around me was just beautiful and on my right I could see the Castle of the Knights Templar and the Convent of Christ, which were always a pleasant presence in the distance.
From this position in the staircase of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade in Tomar, I couldn't even see the end of this huge flight of stairs, and on my right is the Castle of Tomar
This is a famous staircase built in the 19th century, to answer the devotion of the people of Tomar to the patroness saint Senhora da Piedade, who gave the name to the 14th century chapel on top of the hill
Another angle of this huge staircase leading to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade in Tomar. The landscape around is also beautiful and the Castle of Tomar and the Convent of Christ are constant presences
This staircase is so long that I have no other choice but to photographically take you with me all the way up to the top of the the hill, where the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade in Tomar, actually resides. However along the way we stopped a few times to rest and take photos of the surrounding areas. This is part of what you can see. In this case you can view in the distance the Castle of Tomar and the Convent of Christ.
In our journey up to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade in Tomar, we stopped to rest and enjoy the view around us, which in this case is the Castle of Tomar and the Convent of Christ
In our long walk up to hill where the Chapel of Senhora da Piedade in Tomar was built, we took a good number of photos and admired the scenery which included UNESCO World Heritage monuments
As far as I can recall, at this stage of climbing the flight of 286 steps leading to the Chapel of Senhora da Piedade in the City of Tomar, we still hadn't reached the top of the hill
I know, I know that you’ve already seen a few photos of this monumental staircase, which lead us to the top of the hill, where the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade in Tomar was built. However, since I’m trying to give you an idea of different stages of this staircase, and how big is this flight of 286 steps, I think it’s appropriate to show you more photos. They are all different photographs, shot in different areas, though sometimes it may give you the impression that you may be in the same place of the stairway.
At this stage we re-started the climbing of the staircase that lead us to the hill, where the Chapel of Senhora da Piedade was built in the 14th century
The entire journey is pleasant, despite the climbing. You are always surrounded by beautiful plants and trees all the way up to the Chapel of Senhora da Piedade
My wife and son, as usual lead the way, while I am constantly stopping here and there to take photos. At this point we were probably mid way into the final destination, which was the Chapel of Senhora da Piedade
In these set of three photos, my family and I continue to climb the flight of 286 steps to the 400 years old Chapel of Senhora da Piedade in the City of Tomar. At this stage my wife and my son decided to sit down, waiting for me as I was walking at a much slower pace, given that I was taking photos at every opportunity. It was a beautiful Wednesday in Tomar, and I know the day of the week, because when I arrived at the chapel on top of the hill, there was a sign letting us know that this place of worship was closed on Wednesdays.
To get to the Chapel of Senhora da Piedade, first you have to walk through a long ramp before the staircase actually begins. In the distance I could see my family sitting down at the bottom of the staircase, waiting for me
My wife and son sitting down at the bottom of the huge staircase that leads to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade in Tomar. There was still a long walk waiting for us

I have mentioned before that the best way to reach the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade in Tomar, Portugal, is on foot by climbing a flight of 286 steps, to the top of the hill. These photos show us just the beginning of the long walk up to the hill where this 400 years chapel was built. Though the construction of the chapel started in 1512, the staircase was built only in 1846 to answer the growing devotion by the people of Tomar to the patroness saint Nossa Senhora da Piedade.

At this stage of our progress upward to the Chapel of Senhora da Conceição, there were no stairs but a steep cobblestone ramp, built in the middle of the 19th century
The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade in the City of Tomar, Portugal, is located on the top of a hill and to get there on foot you have to climb a monumental staircase of 286 steps. This chapel was built in the 14th century (1512) but it was remodeled in the 17th century. While you are climbing you can also enjoy stunning panoramic views of Tomar. Later on, I will publish new pictures of this chapel, especially photos taken while I was climbing the staircase, from where you can also see the Castle of the Knights Templar, the Christ Convent and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. These three photos of the chapel in the distance, were shot from Varzea Pequena, near Hotel dos Templarios.
