These are buildings which aren’t that new but they also don’t seem to belong to medieval times as some houses in the old areas of Tomar do. I believe that the big house in the first photo of this set is a palace but I don’t know its name and who does it belong to. Apparently the front of this building is at Varzea Grande but I shot the picture from Avenida Dom Nuno Álvares Pereira. The second photo show us the building of a shoe shop called Stara and the third photo are just old buildings and a block of apartments in this same street.
This white building photographed at Avenida Dom Nuno Álvares Pereira in the City of Tomar, seems to be a palace whose name I don't know and its main entrance is at Varzea Grande.
This is big shoe shop at Avenida Dom Nuno Álvares Pereira in Tomar, called Stara.
Old buildings and a block of apartments at Avenida D. Nuno Álvares Pereira in the City of Tomar
These are some of the old houses and apartments at Avenida Cândido Madureira in Tomar. This is one of the areas in town that I have such good memories, from the time I spent in Tomar when I was a kid. I lived here for almost three years. My house was close to the Seven Hills National Forest (Mata dos Sete Montes), but in the sixties, I usually played with my friends of the time in front of my aunties house, near Praceta Alves Redol.

The same house shown in the previous photos can now be seen on the other side of the road. To the right on top of Avenida Cândido Madureira is the entrance to the Seven Hills Forest
This is still Avenida Cândido Madureira but if you follow the road across the street you will end up at the building of the Tribunal of Tomar, located at Varzea Grande
These photos were shot at Everard Street in Tomar, also known as Levada. This old street was built by the Portuguese King Manuel I, who lived in the 15th and 16th centuries. A branch of Nabão River goes this way, flowing between Levada and these buildings which are called Lagares Del Rey. The word Lagares means Press and it is exactly what these building in the photos were for. It was here at Lagares Del Rey that olives used to be pressed to produce olive oil. These buildings were first constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries by the Templars and later remodeled by King Manuel I, supposedly with new olive oil presses, to serve the plantations of olive trees around Tomar.
These buildings on the left of this branch of Nabão River are called Lagares Del Rey (Presses of the King) and they were used for centuries to press olives and produce olive oil
Lagares Del Rey as these buildings are known, were first built in the 12th and 13th century by the Templars who lived in the Castle of Tomar, but later in the 16th century, King D. Manuel I, remodeled them
Lagares Del Rey (Presses of the King) took this name because King D. Manuel I, made this buildings the centre of production of olive oil in Tomar. In more modern times Lagares Del Rey also served as a foundry
There is no other real purpose on this topic which I called Buildings and Houses, than to show you the old and more recent architecture of a town with more than 800 years old. I want people visiting this photoblog to have a feeling of this beautiful and historical jewel, which at one time in the 15th century served as the headquarters of the Grand Master of the Order of Christ, Henry the Navigator to plan Portugal’s maritime expansion throughout the world.
Some houses and buildings near Varzea Pequena in the City of Tomar. In one of the houses there is a snack bar called Europa. The road on the right of the house with palm trees is called Estrada de Leiria
This old house at Varzea Pequena has been well taken care of and I think it belongs to Hotel dos Templários. At least I saw a sign nearby which seems to indicate this house is part of the hotel
On the other side of Vazea Pequena and Rua Marquês de Tomar, there are of course other buildings, most of them old but not too badly preserved
This white building in the City of Tomar is located near the entrance of the Seven Hills National Forest, and on the right side of the road that leads to the Castle of Tomar, the Convent of Christ and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. I also investigated what building was this and its function, and found out that it used to be the old hospital of São Brás, and it seems to be one of the oldest buildings in that street of Tomar, which is called Avenida Cândido Madureira.
The white building on the right used to be the old Hospital of São Brás and the road on the left leads to the Castle of Tomar, the convent of Christ and the Chapel of Senhora da Piedade
Same white building which was once an hospital, is located at a street in Tomar called Avenida Cândido Madureira. This building is very old, may be a few centuries old
Another view of the old Hospital of São Brás and on the right is a middle ages street in Tomar, called Rua do Pé da Costa de Baixo. If you take it you will end up near the building of the Town Council of Tomar at Praça da República
I have no connection whatsoever with these Fernanda Galo laboratories in Tomar, Portugal, but in my visit to my home town in 2010, one morning I went to the shopping centre where Modelo Supermarket is located (Supermercado Modelo) at the street Rua Coronel Garcês Teixeira, when I saw this modern building. As I was carrying my camera and shooting photos of the City of Tomar, was one of my goals while in Portugal, I took a few pictures of this edifice in the suburbs of Tomar. I later investigated a little bit about Fernanda Galo Laboratórios and learned that it was founded in 1958 by Dr. Fernanda Galo who from the beginning decided to use the most advanced technologies and scientific knowledge of the time and nowadays follows the exact same policy.

Fernanda Galo Laboratórios is said to use technologies and scientific knowledge at the cutting edge of clinic diagnostics, quality control of the environment and food safety
Independently of its importance I will gradually be publishing houses and buildings of the City of Tomar in this photoblog category. Since I used to go to Café Estrelas (Estrelas Coffee Shop), situated at the street Rua Marquês de Tomar, I spent a bit of time in the area where these buildings are located. One of them is a government building where unemployed people get assistance to find jobs. You can also see the Castle of Tomar in the distance as well as Nabão River.

I was in Mouchão Park when I took this photo. You can see Nabão River and a few buildings, including a government edifice
The Main building in this photo at Rua Marquês de Tomar, belongs to the government to help the unemployed find jobs
Vieira Guimarães Building (Casa Vieira Guimarães) is located in the centre of the City of Tomar in Portugal and may have been built in 1922. This was the residence of the historian Vieira Guimarães, who after his death left the house to the local council with the right of his wife to live there until her death. The decorative motifs of the windows are linked to the Manueline style revivalism of the 19th Century in Portugal. This is a two storey house and right now in 2011 it is the organizational centre of the Festival of the Trays (Festa dos Tabuleiros) held between 2 and 11 of July 2011.
