My holidays in Portugal, mainly in Tomar, lasted about 45 days and I went out almost everyday, and when I did I would always come back with a good collection of photos. However, there were a few days that I stayed indoors, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t take photos as I had a good view from my mother’s apartment. So these rooftops and the landscapes are the result of one of my small photo sessions at home.
Photo of rooftops in Tomar and the hills on the other side of the town, shot from my mother's apartment
More rooftops right across the window from where I took this picture. I was in an apartment at Rua da Cascalheira in Tomar
Buildings and rooftops in Tomar and in the distance there is a forest
Another set of rooftops in the City of Tomar in Portugal. This time it is the same rooftop from different angles. This is the rooftop of the Post Office Headquarters in the city, which is at Rua Marquês de Tomar, right across the Island of Mouchão Park. As you can see, the Castle of Tomar seems to be right behind this building, but it’s in fact more distant than it appears, and to go there you have to either walk a bit or drive to another area of Tomar to catch the road that leads to the this historical fortification.
First photo of the rooftop of the Post Office headquarters of the City of Tomar in Portugal. This building faces Nabão River and Mouchão Park and behind it at some distance is the Castle of Tomar
The battlements of the Castle of the Knights Templar in Tomar can be seen behind the roof of the Central Post Office
Right behind the roof and chimney of the Post Office of Tomar, is the Castle and the tower of the Church of São João Baptista
I have already taken pictures of rooftops in the City of Tomar from the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, but this time the rooftops of these photos were shot from the staircase of 286 steps that lead to the hill where the chapel was built in the 14th century (1512). Two of the photos were taken around the area of the garden of Varzea Pequena and Hotel dos Templários and the third one is a close up of rooftops at an old area o Tomar.
This photo of rooftops was taken almost at the beginning of the staircase of 286 steps that leads to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade. The pink building is right next Hotel dos Templários
These are rooftops of a couple of houses near Hotel dos Templários, which can be seen behind them. This spot at Senhora da Piedade staircase is relatively close to the garden of Varzea Pequena
This photos was shot about midway the staircase that takes us to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade and the rooftops belong to houses in an old area of Tomar
A few days before returning to Australia, my sister in law Lucinda Moura, invited us to her house at Rua Alexandre Herculano in Tomar. My wife also lived in this house in the 80’s of last century, before we got married. This is an old house, in an old street, in the old part of the town, and we all went to the attic to enjoy the views. As usual I shot a few photos and the ones below are the result of our little adventure.
These are rooftops I captured from the attic of an old house at a street in Tomar called Rua Alexandre Herculano. Notice the large number of TV antennas on the rooftops
Another view of rooftops in a narrow street in Tomar, which was probably built during the middle ages. That green area at the end of the street is the start of an hill that leads to the Castle of Tomar
These houses at Rua Alexandre Herculano in Tomar are really old and the cobblestone street is narrow, but cars are still allowed, and some park them there including my sister in law Lucinda
At the end of our walk through the Seven Hills National Forest in the City of Tomar, my wife, my son and I stopped for a while near the entrance and exit of this woodland for a rest. There were a few benches around and we all sat down there relaxing, but as my mission was to take photos of everything interesting that I could find, I soon was back in action and shot a few pictures of the roofs outside the forest, which included beautiful skies filled with what seemed to be chemtrails.

Another angle of rooftops near the Seven Hills Forest. In the distance you can seen those white buildings at Alameda Primeiro de Março in Tomar
Houses, rooftops and television antennas, right next to the wall that separates the street from the Seven Hills Forest in the City of Tomar in Portugal
When I went to visit the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Tomar, along the way I took lots of panoramic photos to the town, and in the process caught the rooftops of the old city, as well as Mouchão Park, Nabão River and the exuberant vegetation around those areas. Naturally, to get a bit of proximity on these photos, I had to zoom my camera. That’s the beauty of photography, which not only freezes time but allows you to clearly see things that you won’t be able to with a naked eye.
Shot of the rooftops of the old City of Tomar. In the distance you can also see Mouchão, Nabão River and the lush vegetation around the area
Another view of rooftops in the City of Tomar in Portugal, as well as the Island of Mouchão and Nabão River. In the distance you can even see one of those yellow boats that tourists use to sail around
These are the rooftops of another area of Tomar. In the distance it's possible to see Bela Vista Restaurant and the street Rua Marquês de Pombal, where at one time I used to live
Some people think of rooftops as a place with a view to the city, in some hotels you can even find a swimming pool on the rooftop, others put solar power panels on rooftops to reduce power bills, and the rooftops of some cities and towns are covered with a sea of TV antennas. In the case of the City of Tomar, seeing rooftops is inevitable, as soon as you leave the valley where Tomar is built and visit the Castle of Tomar, the Convent of Christ, the chapels of Senhora da Conceição or Senhora da Piedade, etc. These photos were shot when my family and I were walking up to the hill where the Castle of Tomar was built by Gualdim Pais.
I shot this photo in my way up to the Castle of Tomar and the Convent of Christ. From this position I could see the rooftop and tower of the church of São João Baptista, as well as the town council rooftop
While walking to the Castle of the Knights Templarm I took this photo of rooftops of an old area of the City of Tomar.
This shot was taken at the start of my walk to historical monuments located up in the hills of Tomar. This rooftop on the forefront is a car parking, right behind the building of the Town Council of Tomar
As I previously mentioned, when I visit Portugal, I always stay at my parent’s house. After my father passed away, my mother moved from a house at Rua Marquês de Pombal in Tomar, to an apartment at Travessa da Cascalheira. So it was at this place that I shot these photos overlooking the Castle of the Knights Templar and of course the rooftops below. For some reason I find the rooftops of old houses in old towns somewhat interesting. You can also see the rooftop of a sports pavilion built no long ago, on the left side of the Mouchão Park.

Rooftops shot from the same place with the castle in the distance, but this time in a cloudy day
