Children’s Playground at Mouchão Park in Tomar

Parque do Mouchão (Moucão Park) is a luxuriant park located right in the middle of the City of Tomar. Many people live in the surrounding areas of this park, and that gives them the opportunity to spend some quiet time here, either by themselves or with their families. You can feel the serenity of this specific spot, which is especially good for children as there is a kids playground with magnificent views for Nabão River and the old town of Tomar.

Different views from the Island of Mouchão in Tomar

These three photos were all shot from the Island of Mouchão in Tomar. Mouchão Park is divided into separate areas connected by a bridge and a small weir and the area I took these photos is the island. In the first photo you can see the tower of the Church of São João Baptista which was built in the 12th century in an area of the town which is now called Praça da República. The second photo is obviously the Castle of Tomar and the third photo is of people practicing Tai Chi on the other side of the Park, close to a children’s playground.

Outside the Camping Park of Tomar, located at Mouchão Park

There was a time the Camping Park of Tomar (Parque de Campismo de Tomar), was considered one of the best in Europe. Then one day it closed its doors and only reopened six years later, completely  renovated and modernized. This is a Camping Park basically located at the centre of the City of Tomar, at Mouchão Park and close to the soccer and athletics field and the swimming pool Vasco Jacob. This camping park in Tomar which I didn’t take any photos inside, is opened for the entire year and has all the amenities of modern camping grounds.

Wooden water wheel at Nabão River and Mouchão Park in Tomar

This wooden water wheel is placed on Nabão River in one of the entrances to the island of Mouchão Park in Tomar. I believe that this kind of water wheel, which in this case is almost covered with graceful weeping branches of a willow tree, was used by the Romans when they were in Tomar a millennium ago, and when this town used to be called Sellium. Though this wooden wheel is now just a picturesque attraction to the City of Tomar, in past centuries, wheels like this were widely used and apparently still are in some parts of the world where more modern technology is scarce.

Apparently, wooden water wheels like this one in Tomar, are still being used for mills and irrigation in some parts of the world where more advanced technology doesn't exist

Different areas of the Island of Mouchão Park in Tomar

Mouchão Park is divided into two areas linked by a small bridge and a dam. One side of the park is where the soccer field, the kids playground, the sports pavilion and the statues of two important personalities of Tomar are located, but the other part is an island, and that is exactly the side that these photos belong to. In these photos you can partially see the Castle of the Knights Templar in Tomar, houses on the side of the old town and a bridge that connects the park to Rua Marquês de Tomar and to the main post office of the town.

Grass waves at Mouchão Park in the City of Tomar

In my previous visit to the City of Tomar, which was in 1998, I remember to come to this part of Mouchão Park (Parque do Mouchão), and this area wasn’t as beautiful and taken care of as it is now (2010-2011). There was also a coffee shop and bar in the middle and a few bad elements used to get drunk here and act disorderly. It wasn’t too bad, but bad enough to motivate changes. And changes they did. The Town Council of Tomar (Câmara Municipal de Tomar) obviously  did a good job. I specially love the idea of creating waves on the ground covered with grass.

This is another collection of photos from Mouchão Park (Parque do Mouchão) in Tomar, Portugal. Previously I had published a few photos of this park seen from the street Rua Marquês de Tomar, but now two of these photos below were taken inside the park and a third one from a distance near the old bridge of Tomar. In the first photo you can see lush trees, Nabão River (Rio Nabão) and on top of the hill on the left the chapel of Senhora da Conceição. The second photo was shot near a kids playground and the soccer field and on the other side of the river is Vieira Guimarães House. The third photo was taken from one side of Mouchão Park to the island where a inn called Estalagem de Santa Iria is located.

Mouchão Park, a small island in Tomar

These photos of Mouchão Park in the City of Tomar in Portugal, were shot from the street Rua Marquês de Tomar. At the time I was around the coffee shop Estrelas de Tomar to enjoy my after lunch “bica” (expresso coffee). This park is a beautiful island with trees, gardens and an inn called Estalagem de Santa Iria, but when you cross the bridge to the other side where the football field is located, some people also call it Mouchão Park and I think they are right. In one of the photos you can also see at some distance a wooden water wheel which is regarded a landmark of the park.
